Back to the Future: New Technologies in Logistics While the market is waiting for the results of the next NFP, let's talk about ancient technologies. A revolution is brewing in the transportation market as Cargill puts sails on its ships to reduce carbon emissions. Sea freight transport, fully optimized for the wind, can reduce harmful emissions by 30%.Approximately 90% of world trade is carried out by sea, and shipping accounts for almost 3% of global CO2 emissions, but environmentalists believe that the industry is too slow to adapt to global requirements. The idea of using wind energy is not new: the Swedish company Wallenius Marine announced the unique sailing vessel Oceanbird back in 2020. Instead of vintage sails, the ship's hull and 80-meter-high wind turbines work together as a single mechanism. A cruise speed of 10 knots is guaranteed, which means that under standard weather conditions the Oceanbird will be able to cross the North Atlantic in about 12 days. Recall: a standard cargo ship passes the same route in 7-8 days.Cargill Group is part of an initiative called the Marine Cargo Charter that monitors marine emissions. Today, the company constantly charters 600-700 ships and transports 220-240 million tons of cargo per year, but its result in terms of harmful emissions is 5.9% higher than the established norm.Modern sails are developed and marketed by BAR Technologies and manufactured by the Norwegian company Yara Marine Technologies. Cargill intends to launch a vessel with modern sails and test whether wind power can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Barring major technical issues, the Cargill agricultural group will begin trials of the twin-sail bulk carrier in the first quarter of 2023. This will be the first commercial voyage with rigid sails on major sea transport. So for those who are interested in the shares of the transport and technology sector, we recommend that you pay special attention to the shares of these companies.Profits to yall!
